This work presents an experimental study of current-driven turbulence in a plasma undergoing magnetic reconnection in a low-, strong-guide-field regime. Electrostatic fluctuations are observed by small, high-bandwidth, and impedance-matched Langmuir probes. The observed modes, identified by their characteristic frequency and wavelength, include lower-hybrid fluctuations and high-frequency Trivelpiece–Gould modes. The observed waves are believed to arise from electrons energized by the reconnection process via direct bump-on-tail instability ͑Trivelpiece–Gould͒ or gradients in the fast electron population ͑lower-hybrid͒.

Experimental Study of Current-Driven Turbulence During Magnetic Reconnection
Magnetic reconnection is an important process in magnetized plasmas ranging from the laboratory to astrophysical scales. It enables the release of magnetic energy believed to power solar flares and magnetospheric substorms. Reconnection also controls the evolution of the topology of the magnetic field, enabling deleterious instabilities, such as the sawtooth instability in fusion experiments, t...
متن کاملFormation of electron holes and particle energization during magnetic reconnection.
Three-dimensional particle simulations of magnetic reconnection reveal the development of turbulence driven by intense electron beams that form near the magnetic x-line and separatrices. The turbulence collapses into localized three-dimensional nonlinear structures in which the electron density is depleted. The predicted structure of these electron holes compares favorably with satellite observ...
متن کاملMeasurement of lower-hybrid drift turbulence in a reconnecting current sheet.
We present a detailed study of fluctuations in a laboratory current sheet undergoing magnetic reconnection. The measurements reveal the presence of lower-hybrid-frequency-range fluctuations on the edge of current sheets produced in the magnetic reconnection experiment (MRX). The measured fluctuation characteristics are consistent with theoretical predictions for the lower-hybrid drift instabili...
متن کاملObservations of electron phase-space holes driven during magnetic reconnection in a laboratory plasma
This work presents detailed experimental observations of electron phase-space holes driven during magnetic reconnection events on the Versatile Toroidal Facility. The holes are observed to travel on the order of or faster than the electron thermal speed, and are of large size scale, with diameter of order 60 Debye lengths. In addition, they have 3-D spheroidal structure with approximately unity...
